Limu Kohu Restoration and

Educational Resources

Due to loss of cultural practices and the near extinction of fluent speakers of ‘ōlelo Hawai’i (Hawaiian language) following colonization, traditional seaweed practices and knowledge have dwindled.  At the same time, the physical limu population has declined sharply over the past decade, decreasing the accessibility to the community, and also affecting the reef ecosystem. We’re working hand in hand with ‘āina stewards to explore successful restoration of this limu species in Hawai‘i.

Establishing a Supply & Training Program for Restorative Aquaculture Production of Limu Kohu

Funded by the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), this project aims to initiate Limu Kohu restoration at selected locations across Hawai‘i in partnership with community organizations involved in loko i‘a (Hawaiian fishpond) and limu restoration, while also increasing understanding and awareness of Limu Kohu’s environmental and cultural significance through education outreach activities.
